History of El Centro Hispanoamericano
Our Mission
El Centro Hispanoamericano, is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, Board of Immigration Appeals (BIA) recognized organization, located in Plainfield, New Jersey. Created in 1984, El Centro has a 27-year history of counseling and representation of low-income immigrants, including the undocumented. El Centro represents clients before the Citizen and Immigration Service (CIS), in Immigration Court, and in appeals covering matters such as political asylum, cancellation of removal, temporary protected status, naturalization, and self-petitioning aliens under the Violence against Women Act of 1994.
El Centro represents people without regard to country of origin, but we primarily serve the Spanish-speaking community in the central New Jersey region. All of our staff members have facility in Spanish.
In addition to legal assistance, El Centro offers citizenship and ESL courses as part of its effort to help immigrants become productive members of their community. We also run a small emergency food pantry for those in need and provide personal “advocates” for those seeking services from public and private agencies.

• Business Applications Manager at Fragomen, a law firm focusing on global corporate immigration law
• Member of American Immigration Lawyers Association
• Lives in Cranford, NJ
Sister Eileen P. Smith, RSM, Secretary
• Roman Catholic Sister of Mercy of the Americas for 47 years
• Co-Director of Mount Saint Mary House of Prayer, Watchung, NJ which is a small retreat center.
• BA in Modern Languages – French; MA- Theology; Graduate work in Hispanic Ministry
• Has taught in secondary education, parish ministry, formation work in her community, worked in San Pedro Sula, Honduras in HIV home for children and parish work

• Financial consultant to nonprofits and small businesses
• Owner, Taxes Etc LLC
• Tax preparer for 16 years and IRS Enrolled Agent
• Active in Presbytery of Elizabeth, serving on several committees
• Vice chair of board at Stony Point Center
• Lives in Scotch Plains, NJ
Nancy Nichols
• Senior Paralegal with Legal Services of New Jersey
• Assistant Director of El Centro Hispanoamericano from 1990 to1992
• Worked as community organizer in New York City
• Former union carpenter
• BA in Liberal Arts, Sarah Lawrence College and MS in International Affairs, The New School
• Bilingual in English and Spanish
• Resident of North Plainfield for 17+ years
Jennie Rodriguez
• Bilingual in Spanish and English, fluent in Portuguese and has some sign language proficiency
• Assistant pastor at Nuevas Fronteras, United Presbyterian Church in Plainfield
• MSW from Rutgers Graduate School of Social Work
• Masters in Divinity from Princeton Theological Seminary
• BS in Psychology from College of New Rochelle, New Rochelle, NY
• Ten years of experience working as a social worker in the area of case management, substance abuse counselor, family worker, director of outpatient day-rehab program for women with children
• Lives in Edison, NJ
Carmen Salavarrieta
• Bilingual in Spanish and English, immigrated to US from Colombia.
• 30 years of experience working as a volunteer, interpreter, activist for the Hispanic community, and community advocate
• Board member of El Centro since 1992
• On the Board of Trustees for Plainfield Health Center and Chair of the International Committee in the Metuchen Diocese’s Catholic Council of Women
• One of the founders of Angels for Action, a non-profit organization in Plainfield, NJ
• Currently lives in Piscataway, NJ

• Was organizing pastor of La Promesa Presbyterian Mission, an outreach effort of the Redeemer Church in Flushing, New York and interim pastor at the Home Presbyterian Church in the Bronx
• Was director of vocations at Princeton Seminary, and for fifteen years he was program director of the Hispanic/Latino(a) Leadership Program under the auspices of the Center of Continuing Education.

Esther Chavez
• Immigrated from El Salvador where she was a teacher and worked with Archbishop Oscar Romero
• El Centro Executive Director, 1988-1994
• Worked as community organizer with the American Friends Service Committee, 1999-2007
• Lives in Asheville, NC
Jeffery LaCross
• President of Saint Vincent DePaul at Saint Joseph’s RC Church in North Plainfield
• Community activist and organizer
• Resides in North Plainfield.
Denis Johnston
• Director at Service Employees International Union Local 32BJ in NYC
• Worked as Director of Immigrant Rights Program, American Friends Service Committee
• Co-founder of PeaceWorks, supporting peace and social justice in Central America

La Historia de El Centro Hispanoamericano
Nuestra Misión
El Centro Hispanoamericano, es una organización 501(c)(3) sin fines de lucro, reconocida por el Consejo de Asuntos de Inmigración (BIA , ubicada en Plainfield, Nueva Jersey. Creada en 1984, El Centro lleva 27 años aconsejando y representando a inmigrantes de bajos recursos, incluyendo a indocumentados. El Centro representa clientes ante el Servicio de Inmigración y Ciudadanía (CIS), en Cortes de Inmigración, y en apelaciones sobre asuntos tales como asilo político, cancelación de remoción y extranjeros que solicitan protección bajo la Ley de Violencia contra la Mujer de 1994.
El Centro representa a personas sin importar su origen, pero principalmente sirve a la comunidad hispanoparlante de la región central de Nueva Jersey. Todos nuestros empleados hablan español.
Además de asistencia legal, El Centro ofrece cursos de ciudadanía y cursos de ESL (Ingles como Segunda Lengua) como parte de sus esfuerzos para ayudar a que los inmigrantes sean miembros productivos de su comunidad. También tenemos un pequeño almacén de comida de emergencia para aquellos que lo necesiten y proporcionamos “defensores” para aquellos que buscan servicios de agencias privadas o publicas
